Serving the Community

Internship Programs for City Youth and College Students
Detroit Electrical Services is committed to building our community in more ways than contractual business opportunities. DES is also committed to providing opportunities for teaching the electrical services and construction industry to our city's youth. Our commitment can be seen through the example of two young men, Moreno Gray and Derrick Owens:

Moreno Gray, a High School student in the Detroit Public Schools was selected by the Detroit Public Schools for job placement at Detroit Electrical Services through a program called Workforce and Career Enhancement (WACE). This program provides eligible Detroit Public High School students with an opportunity to examine a variety of careers and to take advantage of valuable training opportunities afforded them in this program.

Moreno worked diligently in the program and displayed an enthusiastic interest in the electrical construction field. Because of the exceptional job that Moreno did while working in the WACE Program, the staff at DES was very impressed with Moreno’s initiative and decided to offer Moreno a permanent position as a Warehouse Assistant once the WACE Program ended. Moreno has been employed with DES since June, 2003.

Moreno has taken the next very important steps to prepare for a lucrative career in electrical contracting and construction by applying for enrollment into Lawrence Technological University in Southfield Michigan.

DES has written a letter of recommendation for Moreno Gray to Lawrence Technological University stating: “Moreno has shown great interest in the electrical construction field. He has proven he has the knowledge, skills and the drive to be successful. Detroit Electrical Services highly recommends Moreno Gray as a candidate for enrollment at Lawrence Technological University. We know that he will succeed in this venture and wish him the best of luck.” – Michael F. Graham, Vice President

Derrick Owens - Derrick sought an opportunity to discover more about the field of electrical engineering through an internship program at DES. Initially, Derrick was matched with several DES Project Managers to give him a broad prospective of the various projects that DES was contracted to deliver to a multifaceted customer base. It did not take very long, however before Derrick was offered a permanent position with DES elevating him from an internship helper to a Project Coordinator. Multitasking skills were important in his new position because Derrick assisted several Project Managers in a variety of tasks to ensure that project schedules were realistic and attainable and most important that projects moved according to schedule and were delivered on time.

Derrick has already earned a Bachelors of Science Degree in Human Resources from Michigan State University. However, because of the internship opportunity that provided Derrick with “first hand” insight, knowledge and experience in the field of electrical engineering, Derrick is currently attending Lawrence Technological University where he is majoring in Electrical Contracting and Technology.
